The Lambs bounced back from their midweek defeat at Bodmin with a deserved and comfortable win against Cullompton.
The home team had the better of the early exchanges and, following a good move, Dave Hallett had a shot well saved by Joe Moore in the visitor’s goal.
In the 14th minute the Lambs took the lead, when Paul Quinn took a free kick and delivered a great floated ball into the penalty area, which Jammie Ahern headed back across goal, and, as Moore hesitated, Dan Pethick reacted quickest to latch onto the ball and hook it into the net.
Four minutes later Pethick nearly doubled the lead, as he and Jarryd Kelly combine well to open up the visitor’s defence, but Pethick’s shot went just over the bar. The home team produced some really attractive football, creating further chances to increase their lead, with efforts from Kelly, Pethick, and Sullivan. Shortly before the interval the home team were indebted to goalkeeper Andy Meeds who produced a great save to deny Aiden Moyle from getting an equaliser for the visitors.
The Lambs scored their second of the afternoon in the 52nd minute when Jimmie Keily crossed from the right for Martin Sullivan to head home past Moore at the back post.
The Lambs were continuing to have the greatest share of possession and put the visitors’ defence under considerable pressure. Cullompton were always dangerous on the counterattack and, in the 53rd minute. Meeds produced a top quality save, to claw the ball out of the top corner and deny substitute Chris Garnsworthy from reducing the arrears.
Martyn Sullivan then increased the home team’s lead when he beat three defenders before slotting the ball home inside Moore’s near post. The Lambs made the game safe with a fourth goal in the 72nd minute, when Sullivan’s left wing cross found substitute Andy Sargent challenging Moore and he was first to regain his feet, firing home a shot from five yards with his very first touch.
Cullompton never gave up and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 85th minute when a left wing cross from Brett Worbey was drilled home by Phil Everett from six yards.
This was a much better performance from the Lambs, producing some of the quality football that we witnessed earlier in the season. Dan Pethick and Jarryd Kelly were a constant threat up front, causing the visitors’ defence problems throughout with their pace and movement. Meeds again belied his years with his agility, to pull off two really terrific saves. Everyone played their part in a good all round team performance, which they must continue for the remainder of the season.
