The Chestnut Appeal Need You – Please Read!

December 12, 2011 News

If a close relative developed prostate cancer before he was 60….. …..you are four times more likely to develop it !!!

The Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer was set up by a group of consultants at Derriford Hospital when they realised that they were treating as many men with prostate cancer as women with breast cancer, but the men had little or no support.

That was in 2000, and since then the charity has grown from strength to strength and has set about to introduce to the region the very latest in treatments and technology not available on the NHS.   The Chestnut Appeal has also put in place specialist prostate cancer nurses at major health centres in Devon and Cornwall.

Our latest campaign is to raise money for two mobile scanners which will see our consultants out into the community and enable the early detection of prostate cancer.

The Chestnut Appeal continues to raise funds and spread awareness across Devon and Cornwall with events and campaigns across the year.

In 2012, we have a number of events including; the Chestnut Cup 6 a-side football tournament in May and an Ascot Ladies Day in June.  We are one of the chosen charities for the Plymouth Half Marathon and at Plymouth Volksfest.  We will be cycling the Camel Trail on Fathers Day and the Tarka Trail in October and we have our second Burgh Island swim on Sunday 2nd September.  And in August we are holding a Sky Dive Day at Dunkeswell Airfield for those wanting to jump out of a plane at 15,000 feet! And a swim from the Breakwater to Plymouth Hoe.
