Grinding it Out

Torpoint Athletic 0 Tavistock A F C 2

Although the Lambs performance did not reach the high standards in the Godolphin game, they were more than a match for an industrious Torpoint, whose work rate and intensity was proof of their recent good form and results.

The Lambs were slow out of the blocks and the game was very even over the first fifteen minutes with both sides creating an opportunity to open the scoring, Torpoint’s Sam Broomfield shot over from twenty yards. Shortly afterwards the Lambs were awarded a free kick twenty five yards from goal, Dave Hallett’s kick found Glyn Hobbs his shot was blocked and the ball fell to Lewis Daw but he shot wide of the target.

The hosts then had a shot from Payne well saved by Jack Ord. Torpoint keeper Hardie then made a good save to deny Daw from scoring from a corner kick. Back came Torpoint when the visitors defence lost possession which allowed Rosenquest to move into the penalty, but he shot wide of the target.

As the half progressed the Lambs were beginning to get the upper hand and were rewarded in the 36th minute when a beautiful pass from Glynn Hobbs, split the home defence, and put Jack Crago in on goal, he calmly slotted the ball home from fifteen yards giving keeper Hardie no chance of saving. Ben Cross the made a great run down the right flank, his square ball found Hobbs on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot cleared the bar by inches.

The Lambs continued their impressive efficiency in the second half as Coombe, Crago and Fyneboy all went close to increasing the visitors lead. The home team were then awarded a free kick twenty five yards out but once again West shot was over the bar.

The Lambs deservedly increased their lead in the 65th minute when fine work by Ben Cross saw his well, weighted pass set Glyn Hobbs free, who calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper into the net. Ten minutes later Hobbs put Crago in on goal, he appeared to be brought down by the keeper, but unbelievably the referee waved play on. The home team kept up their intensity, but never really looked like being able to break down a resilient Lambs defence that saw the game out to keep another clean sheet.

This was another sound performance by the team which keeps up their challenge for a third place in the league at the end of the season
