The Lambs remain the main challengers to leaders Exmouth Town for the title, in the final stages of the campaign. They have found it difficult recently to overwhelm teams in the manner they did earlier in the season.
The Lambs made a fine start to the game creating good scoring opportunities, but once again they lacked that finishing touch. First it was Luke Brown who fired over the bar when well placed. In the 10th minute a fine move saw the ball find Jack Crago but his overhead kick was just wide of the target.
The home team were finding it difficult to break down a resolute Newquay defence, and when they did manage to create scoring chances the found Newquay’s keeper Peters in fine form. He made two really good saves the first to deny Josh Robins, turning his fierce shot away for a corner kick, then a fine reflex save to deny Josh Grant. The home team failed to find that illusive goal before the interval.
The second half started in similar fashion with the home team having the lions share of possession but unable to get the break through. Luke Brown missed two chances to convert goal chances, Peters making a easy save from his first effort, and the second when he shot over the bar when well placed.
Manager Stuart Henderson made changes just before the hour mark with Tyler Elliot and Tallan Burns replacing Luke Brown and Sam Hughes. Five minutes later Liam Prynn replaced Sam Davey.
The Lambs finally got the breakthrough they deserved in the 70th minute when from a corner kick taken by Dave Hallett saw Matty David rise high to power home an unstoppable header from ten yards.
Two minutes later a really good move saw Josh Robins produce a penetrating run down the flank, his cross found Josh Grant, his shot was brilliantly turned around the post by keeper Peters for a corner kick.
Newquay continued to look dangerous with their counter attacks, and Josh Oak had to make a smart save to deny Squires from levelling the score. Both Jack Crago and Tallan Burns went close to getting that all important goal. It finally came in the 81st minute when a fine move saw Liam Prynn provide a great pass to Jack Crago, his pace took him past his marker before firing the ball low into the corner of the net to seal victory for the Lambs to seal a hard earned victory.
Although far from their best the Lambs still had to much against a dogged resilient Newquay team that defended well and looked dangerous with their counter attacks.
This win keeps the home teams challenge for the title alive, but they will have to improve on this performance, to be a real threat.
Man of the Match. Matt David for his disciplined display at the heart of defence, and the all important headed goal to break the deadlock.
Manager Stuart Henderson said” Newquay were dogged in their display. We created good openings and were unlucky not to be in front at the interval. We continued to probe in the second half and Matty David put us ahead with a fine header. Jack Crago then sealed the deal, after fine work by Liam Prynn.
